BBK Performance first introduced the Varitune performance mufflers at the SEMA show in 2011, when they were first shown they became the hit of the show gathering a ton of editorial magazine and video coverage across the the automotive media spectrum. The design is simple, it is a performance exhaust muffler that can be tuned for sound and performance simply by turning the adjustable set screw on the outside which moves a specially designed plunger inside, away or towards the main exhaust flow tube allowing resitance or free flow of the exhaust. This is what determines the sound and performance of the muffler.. Once the desired sound is obtained the position is set and locked with the locking nut, best of all this can be done at anytime from outside the car. The adjustment set screw and locking nut are manufactured from stainless steel to prevent any type of gauling and rust that would prevent a smooth adjustment. After some final design and development delays BBK has announced today that the New Varitune mufflers, cat back and axle back exhaust systems are in production at the BBK main manufacturing and production facility in Temecula CA.

If you get chance pick up a copy of 5.0 Mustang & Super Fords Magazine (August 2013 issue) which is on news stands everywhere. It features a great article on some of BBK’s popular bolt on performance parts for the popular 2011-2014 Ford Mustang 5.0 GT and Boss 302.
The installation was done on Wayne Howards 2011 Ford Mustang GT at the BBK distribution and R&D facility in Florida last month. The Mustang was purchased by Wayne a few months ago and was a bone stocker but once a set of BBK long tube exhaust headers with short mid high flow catalytic X pipe, a BBK power series 85mm throttle body and high flow performance cold air intake system was installed and tuned with an SCT custom tune by James Gordon from tuning by James – this car netted a very nice +63 RWHP and around 48 ft/lb! We will take that thank you very much! Thats a 17% improvement over stock in the higher RPM’s.

Bolting on parts is one of the most satisfying parts of owning a Mustang, but sometimes those parts don’t always get along. That’s why it’s often a safe bet to select a package from one outfit. Sometimes these packages consist of gear from a variety of manufacturers; other times they feature hard parts from the same manufacturer—but they all share the common thread of tuning to ensure they all play nice with one another. One of the leading manufacturers of bolt-on gear for Mustangs is BBK Performance, a company that got its start selling parts for pushrod 5.0s and quickly moved to manufacturing its own.
Today BBK offers a full complement of the popular bolt-on parts for modern Coyote Mustangs, and recently decided to put these parts together in packages, complete with tuning from SCT Performance. “We want to offer a complete pack- Wayne Howard’s ’11 Mustang GT was the ideal testbed for these BBK Power Packages, as it was dealer stock. By adding a select group off BBK parts and topping them off with a BBK-specific calibration, the car registered some impressive gains across the entire rpm range. Horse Sense: Soon you’ll be able to round out the exhaust system featured here with BBK’s new VariTune mufflers. These mufflers feature a mechanical adjuster that allows you to tweak the mufflers’ sound, moving it up or down by 10 decibels. By Ted Sheckler Photos courtesy of BBK Performance age that optimizes the full performance potential of our products,” explained BBK Eastern Sales Manager Wayne Howard. “By combining the efforts of our engineers and SCT tuner James Gordon, we were able to develop tune files that increase horsepower and torque, all while maintaining stock driveability.
The included BBK/ SCT tuners will be pre-loaded with tune files calibrated specifically for BBK products, and this will eliminate the need and expense of a custom tune.” We’ve touched on some of these parts in previous issues, most notably the throttle body and cold-air intake (“Fly by Wire,” July ’12, p. 98), but we were intrigued to see how the full package, replete with long-tube headers, would improve Coyote performance. It’s worth noting that BBK will develop similar packages for other applications in the future, but the setups we are covering in this story are the Blackout CAI and tuner (PN 17685, $699.99); Blackout CAI, tuner, and throttle body (PN 71305, $1099.99); and Blackout CAI, tuner, throttle body, and long-tubes (PN 71345, $2099.99).
Fortunately, Wayne is a rabid enthusiast and the owner of a ’11 Mustang GT. He happily volunteered his ride as the rolling laboratory for the development of these packages. Wayne bolted the parts on his car while snapping photos for us, and worked with James Gordon of Tuning by James (www.tuningbyjames.com) to develop BBK specific calibrations that You have to love making power with bolt-on mods. Simply adding the BBK cold-air intake and tune generated an extra 18.9 hp and 36.10 lb-ft of torque to the rear wheels. That’s definitely a gain you can feel. Stepping up to the BBK 90mm throttle body shows the factory setup is pretty efficient, but there’s still some gains to be had, as it added 2.03 hp and 1.15 lb-ft of torque. Our guess is the gains might have been larger if the throttle body was added after the exhaust, but that’s a test for another time.
That said, adding the BBK long-tubes and high-flow catalytic X-shape crossover really paid off at the back wheels. These parts bolster horsepower by an additional 27.46 and 14.88 lb-ft of torque. The peak-to-peak gains totaled 48.39 hp and 45.77 lb-ft of torque, and the spread was even wider at higher rpm, which shows the value of a matched combination. “It amazes me that we were able to add this much power to the already highly tuned Coyote engine,” Wayne said. “Ford did a great job developing this engine, but our packages prove there is additional power to be gained are geared toward drive ability and safety rather than all-out performance. That said, the gains are pretty impressive. “The additional power is addictive!,” Wayne said. “The car was impressive in stock form, but with the increased horsepower, torque, and sound, it’s hard to keep your foot off the throttle. Driving around town is also more enjoyable due to the low-end gains.” After you skip to the dyno sidebar, be sure to backtrack to the captions to see the steps responsible for those impressive naturally aspirated gains. 5.0.

Check Out this latest editorial feature about our Gen5 Camaro performance parts from LSXTV. they discuss some of the BBK Performance Parts available for the new Gen5 Camaro both the V6 & V8 configurations. Just in case you didn’t know BBK also has a ton of performance parts for the earlier F Body Camaro and Firebird – Exhaust Headers, throttle bodys, pulley kits and more.

One of the strengths of the 4th gen F-body family was the tremendous amount of aftermarket support garnered before the end of the line in 2002. With the return of the Camaro in 2010, things picked up where they left off. Since that time, the 5th gen Camaro has experienced just as many firsts as the C6 and C7 generations of Corvette, and the latest pony lineup has brought back some of the marque’s most famous sub-models, including the blown ZL1, and for 2014, the Z28 will join the late-model Camaro family as the model in-between the ZL1 and the not quite as potent SS.

Luckily for the now-established community of 5th-Gen pony enthusiasts, BBK Performance offers a selection of performance parts and accessories that are specifically designed to be direct, bolt-on components for the 5th-Gen Camaro platform. Many of BBK’s components are CAD-engineered for premium quality and performance, and their inventory of parts are not only designed to OEM standards, but are actually made to surpassfactory specifications.

Some of the parts and accessories that BBKoffers for the ’10 and later Camaro include high-flow and washable cold-air systems with cotton filters that are designed with maximum airflow in mind, and the company also offers a selection of shorty and full-length headers for all 2010-12 LS3 and 2010-11 RS V6 platforms.

BBK Performance offers aftermarket throttle bodies, headers and other parts/accessories for your next, 5th-Gen Camaro build.

Also on deck are throttle bodies to help your late-model LS breath easy. The two throttle assemblies that BBK has recently introduced are a 95 and 102-millimeter unit, both of which are designed to fit any 2010-13 V8 pony or ’07-present Vette.
