The third-generation Mustang was produced by Ford Motor Company from 1979 to 1993. Built on Ford’s ubiquitous Fox platform, it evolved through a number of sub-models, trim levels, and drivetrain combinations during its production life. The Fox body Mustang underwent a multi-faceted update for 1987, and for a time seemed destined for replacement with a rebadged import before Ford Motor company executives were swayed by consumer opinions. Ford Mustang Enthusiasts group the generation into two segments: the 1979-1986 carbureted Mustang cars, with their quad headlight arrangement, and the 1987-1993 Ford Mustangs that were EFI electronically fuel injected, with their "no-grille" front fascia styling. Production of the Fox Body Mustangs ended in 1993 with the introduction of the SN95 fourth-generation Mustang for the 1994 model year. However not surprisingly the unique styling and nostalgia of the 79-93 Ford Mustang have made them become desirable restoration projects and as such BBK performance parts manufacture some of the most popular bolt ons to make the Fox Body Mustangs perform well above stock.
What appeared in 1994 was an all new Mustang clearly influenced by the styling themes of Mustangs past. The SN95 Ford Mustang still had the familiar 5.0 liter pushrod engine with a revised intake manifold and throttle body set up but it also had great new styling, there was the galloping horse in the grille, the side scallop reappeared and the taillights were split into three segments (albeit horizontally instead of vertically). Inside, the cockpit featured a twin-pod dashboard that recalled the dashes used between '64 1/2 and '73. Only two body styles were now offered, a two-door coupe with a semi fastback roof and a convertible, availalble as a V6 with a 3.8L engine, GT or LX with the 5.0L engine and the Cobra also with a performance HO 5.0L engine. The new SN95 Ford Mustang still used the Fox platform which was thoroughly reinforced for the 1994 and 1995 Mustang, but the basic modified MacPherson strut front and coil sprung solid rear axle returned intact. Four-wheel disc brakes were now used throughout the line with ABS optional. In 1995 we saw a the limited release of the white Cobra R with a 351 engine. In 1996 the Ford Mustang GT saw the introduction of the new 4.6L Overhead cam engines and the Cobras were treated to a new 4.6l DOHC engine. The Mustang was restyled in 1999 with more refined sharper lines which would prevail through 2004 as would the engines, then it was time for a complete new body style and chassis.
The fifth generation Ford Mustang began with the 2005 model year, It was manufactured at the AutoAlliance International plant in Flat Rock, Michigan. Originally designed by Sid Ramnarace, the new Mustang's design was based on two preproduction concept cars that first debuted at the 2003 North American International Auto Show. There are several variants of the fifth-generation Ford Mustang produced including the Mustang GT, V6 the GT/California Special, Shelby Mustang GT, the Famous Black & Gold Shelby Hertz Mustang and the classic Bullitt Mustang. Ford managed to pay homage to a classic style without having the end result looking like a caricature of the original. The canted nose with its big grille and round headlights recalls the '67 to '69 Mustangs, while the side sculpting, fastback roofline and taillights recall those ponies of the 1965 vintage. Even the triangular side windows are reminiscent of what Carol Shelby did when he made the 1965 Mustang 2 + 2 Fastback into his Shelby GT 350. The new 2005 Mustang GT and V6 also saw new engines, a new 300HP 4.6L 3V and a new 4.0L V6 putting out 210 HP. In 2007 Ford entered a new partnership with Carroll Shelby to introduce the exciting new and powerful Shelby GT500. It had different aggressive body styling and a big hood to cover a supercharged 5.4L Ford Power plant pushing out 580Hp and 480 ft/lb torque. other upgrades of course was the suspension and big brakes. BBK Performance manufacture direct bolt on performance parts that will make any of these high performance Mustangs the king of the road.
