Ford GT Runner Up At 2017 Le Mans Race
Congratulations to The Chip Ganassi Racing Team and Car number 67 who raced 24hrs non stop to take a second place podium finish this last weekend in what was a very exciting final few laps.
The Chip Ganassi team had another full squad of Ford EcoBoost GT's to compete in this year’s race, three US based teams and one from the UK all competing in the Le Mans GTE Pro class and all piloted by an impressive team of drivers.
The Indianapolis based organization made its Le Mans debut in 2016 and came away with another historic win with Ford GT car number 68 claiming GTE-Pro class honors with Joey Hand, Dirk Mueller and Sebastien Bourdais.
Taking the third place podium for the team last year was GT car number 69 piloted by Ryan Briscoe, Scott Dixon and Richard Westbrook.
The other GT Cars 66 and 67 finished forth and ninth respectively.
This was also the 50th anniversary of Ford's 1-2-3 win over Ferarri back in 1966 so this win was reviewed as a historical comeback for Ford.
Fast forward to 2017 and we saw a very different race with the Ford GT's once again proving to be a formidable force against the Corvettes, Ferraris and Aston Martins.
After 24 hours It all came down to pit strategy and luck:
In the final few laps we witnessed a thrilling battle between 3 cars.
The number 63 Corvette driven by Jordan Taylor who was out front being literally tailgated lap after lap by the number 97 Aston Martin driven by Jonny Adam. Adam managed to force Taylor into a high speed lock up and went straight across the second Mulsanne chicane, that flat spotted one tire and caused another to start to deflate.
That was enough to allow the Aston to easily go by and see the Corvette slow to a pace that allowed the number 67 Ford GT driven by Harry Tincknell to also pass the stricken Corvette as well.
2017 Final result For GTE Pro:
1st Aston Martin - Turner/Adam/Serra GBR Aston Martin Racing Vantage GTE 340 laps GTE Pro
2nd Ford GT #67 - Priaulx/Tincknell/Derani USA Ford Chip Ganassi Team UK Ford GT 340 laps GTE Pro
3rd Corvette #63 - Magnussen/Garcia/Taylor USA Corvette Racing Corvette C7.R 340 laps GTE Pro
The BBK Performance Team would like to see a Mustang Team compete In the 2018 24hrs of Le Mans Race - but for now we will have to wait and see - it seems that the Ford GT is a car that is really proving to be very competitive and reliable with the 3.5 liter supercharged EcoBosst engine a littel less displacement than the winning 7 liter naturally aspirated GT's from the 1966 event - let’s see what Ford brings to the table for next year’s race.
